Adoption information

Your voice belongs in every part of an adoption plan.

Life Choices provides adoption information and support free of charge. Learning about adoption does not commit you to placement; it gives you space to understand the process and consider its lifelong impact.

A clear starting point

Adoption is legal, personal, and lifelong.

Adoption permanently transfers legal parental rights and responsibilities to the adoptive parent or parents after the process is finalized. It can also carry lasting relationships, questions, grief, connection, and change for everyone involved.

01

Exploring is not agreeing

Speaking with an agency, counselor, or adoption attorney is a way to gather information. It does not mean you have made a final decision.

02

A plan develops over time

You may explore family preferences, the level of future contact, hospital wishes, counseling, and legal representation before the birth.

03

Your feelings still matter later

Birth parents may experience many emotions before and after adoption. Neutral counseling and ongoing support can remain important long after placement.

Choices within a plan

An adoption plan can hold more than one kind of choice.

There is no single template for every family. A qualified professional can explain what is available, what is legally enforceable, and which decisions remain yours at each stage.

01

Choosing a family

You may be able to review profiles, ask questions, meet prospective parents, and consider values that matter to you.

02

Thinking about contact

Contact can range from direct visits and calls to updates through another person or limited identifying information. Definitions and enforceability vary.

03

Selecting professionals

Agency and independent adoption processes differ. Verify licensing, services, fees, counseling, family screening, and whose interests each professional represents.

04

Planning care and support

Ask about prenatal care, counseling, birth and hospital preferences, legal help, practical expenses, and support after the adoption.

Questions worth bringing

Ask until the process feels clear—not rushed.

A trustworthy professional should make room for questions, explain documents in plain language, and respect your right to explore parenting or change direction before legal consent is finalized.
